Edinburgh Airport History

Edinburgh Airport was opened by her Majesty the Queen in 1977. Like many other UK airports the history of Edinburgh Airport was initially as an RAF base. Edinburgh Airport was the site of a First World War aerodrome which later became RAF Turnhouse.

Turnhouse Aerodrome, which later became Edinburgh Airport was established for the Royal Flying Corps in 1915.

The first scheduled civilian service from Edinburgh Airport started in 1947 linking Edinburgh with London. This was operated by British European Airways.

Edinburgh Airport was taken over by BAA plc (previously the British Airports Authority) in 1971.

The BAA have invested heavily in the facilities at Edinburgh Airport since then. Since 1999 over 100 million pounds has been spent which has enabled Edinburgh Airport to increase its passenger numbers to in excess of 7 million.

International passenger traffic at Edinburgh Airport has doubled during the last three years and it is expected that this growth will be maintained. In fact, Edinburgh Airport is now Scotland's busiest airport for scheduled International flights.

There are approximately 128 daily flights between Edinburgh Airport and the five London Airports.
